I am not going to admit I watch NASCAR racing. That seems like admitting you watch porn, sure we all do it but nobody really wants to talk about it. No other “sport” seems to have as many over-the-top merchandising opportunities as the great NASCAR does, hell they are driving around in glorified billboards anyways. Did you ever stop and think that you are just watching a really long ad? One ad toting driver is Jeff Gordon. I guess he is my favorite and I was lucky enough to get this plate as a gift.
Now like I said in the intro, I don’t want to admit to watching the so-called “sport” or NASCAR. I don’t want to ruin the fun for others or a chance to drink tasteless light beer, so I will try to focus on talking about this license plate, but like a driver saying he won’t bump another driver out of the way to win, I might be lying.
One of the best times I have in my life has been when I used to watch NASCAR with my brother. The “sport” provides so many great opportunities for arm chair comedians cannon fodder, it seems in-humanly possible that anything will come along that can so quickly and easily be made fun of, except for maybe the fore mentioned light beer!
I get a chuckle at cracking wise cracks at drivers like Jeff Gordon, who once I saw switched his hat three times in a post-race interview! Nothing is more ridiculous then this shameless act other than the super-flat and stiff hats they put on during interviews. I mean don’t they have an un-paid intern that they could have him, you know, fix the hats before the driver puts them on. Maybe they are worried about lice as interns can’t afford shampoo or something like that.
I don’t see a way for NASCAR to ever change, the commercialism is rooted in its roots like light beer to a high school party. It’s like NASCAR without beer, it won’t happen. Jeff Gordon is one of the most successful drivers and to me seems like one of the most humble at what he does. There is a lot of talk about drivers accomplishments like they are above God himself or the all mighty Zeus would be impressed. I doubt that, they are one bump and run away from turning into a raging lunatic trying to win a race. They will scream out its on like NBA players and rampage through the field, hitting and smashing everything they can in hopes the other drivers will foul them for their flagrant actions.
Jeff Gordon is also easy to make fun of. It brings me to this license plate of which I got from my loving mother. She got it as a gag gift many years because she remembers my brother and I making fun of the “sport” so much. I had a fun time getting this a present and its currently holding its own on my wall. The plate is made out of plastic and of standard license plate size. I don’t know how much it cost but it really has no value except to the people that live and die for the “sport”.
There is not much else to say about this plate, it’s bright and colorful and stands out which I like. I don’t know if I will hang on-to it forever or not but as a reminder of the fun times I had with my brother it’s priceless. Ok, not really, what do I hear $10? Ok, how about $4.40. Yes? No?
